BAROQUES / At the Avant Garde

In 1967, Milwaukee (Wisconsin) band The Baroques recorded an LP for the legendary Chess Records label, hoping to reconnect with rock audiences. The album, an anomaly within the psychedelic garage scene, is striking in its varied dimensions, subtly somber atmospheres, and unconventional sonic and psychedelic outbursts that foreshadowed future musical movements.
Their first single, Mary Jane , was hastily banned by a radio station, fearing possible psychotropic references, even though there was no trace of THC in the lyrics.
The band's final concert coincided with the venue's final concert, Milwaukee's Avant Garde Coffeehouse, which closed its doors on October 27, 1968.
The poster was the work of Jim Barker, who created many other simple black and white posters for the room.
