The majority of the band's music was written by Country Joe McDonald and Barry The Fish Melton, with lyrics about themes central to the counterculture: anti-war protests, free love, and drug use. Combining folk, rock, blues, and psychedelia, the band's sound was distinguished by original guitar melodies and the acidic passages of David Cohen's Farfisa organ.
