ELLIOT DOLD / Nocturne 16

This is one of the illustrations that Elliot Dold made to accompany Harold Hersey's poems from Night , a book published in New York in 1943 by Personal Books Inc. It is composed of 52 poems (51 nocturnes and The Jest of Ishtakar ).
Elliot's brother, Douglas, blind since they both served in World War I, was the editor and commissioner. According to Hersey, "To my knowledge, this was the only instance in which a blind man edited a fiction magazine. A traveler, author, student, man of the world, and splendid friend, his death eliminated one of the few men endowed with the knowledge, experience, and bubbling energy necessary for this work."
