Parece ser que The Yardbirds tomaron su nombre del apodo que tenía Charlie Parker, Yardbird, que luego quedó reducido a Bird. Se dice que surgió tras un percance con el vehículo en el que viajaba el saxofonista con su orquesta. Atropellaron alguna gallina y Parker insistió en parar para recuperar el animal que hubiera resultado difunto y cocinárselo más tarde. También dicen que era, simplemente, porque le encantaba comer pollo.
En principio yardbird se puede referir a cualquier ave que se cría en el patio o un espacio cerrado, no solamente gallinas.
